Gold Purity Guide

Understanding karats, hallmarks, and what they mean for your gold.

Gold purity chart
Gold purity is measured in karats (or carats). Pure gold is 24 karats, meaning 24 out of 24 parts are gold. Lower karat numbers mean the gold is mixed with other metals for durability and color.

Common karat grades

The most common purities you will see in jewelry and coins are 24K, 22K, 18K, and 14K. Each has a different percentage of gold and typical uses.
  • 24K – 99.9% gold, soft, used for investment and some traditional jewelry.
  • 22K – 91.6% gold (e.g. 916 hallmark), very common in Indian jewelry.
  • 18K – 75% gold (e.g. 750), popular for engagement rings and durable jewelry.
  • 14K – 58.3% gold, durable and affordable for everyday wear.

Hallmarks

Hallmarks are official marks stamped on gold to indicate purity and origin. For example, 916 means 91.6% gold (22K), and 750 means 75% gold (18K). Always buy from reputable sources and check for proper hallmarking.
